An overnight tornado that struck the college on the night between the 12th and 13th of January 2003 unearthed a very old tree at college. It fell right into the path to the main gate, so that the staff could not park in school.

The following is the article written in The Edwardian 2002-2003, page 14, which is accompanied by three photos of the tree (one of which is above thanks to Mr. Borg):
Students and staff returning to the College on January 13th 2003 were met by a very different view of the College entrance. A whirlwind struck the south side of the island the night before and uprooted a very old tree in the front garden. This tree fell right across the driveway that leads to the main entrance where many staff members usually park their cars!
This was a very old tree, probably planted in the very early days when St. Edward's still served as a Military Hospital. A quick count of its annual rings dates this tree to over 115 years. In fact it can be seen in some of the old photos reproduced in the article From the Archives.
Pity it had to come to such an untimely and unexpected end.
