New Post Ultima history
I was wandering looking for anything Ultima, and i got here. When i read the project of U4, i was very happy, and then i came into the forum, and read the messages.

Of course, i played Ultima Quest of the Avatar on NES, and liked the game. Then i played Ultima 7 the black Gate, and i indeed loved the game. then it came ultima 8, and i was looking for the plot, the story and anithing related, cause i really can't play them (i found the u4 pc version two years ago, and i can't stand the graphics, i kno, the game is old, damn i got it late:eek )

then ultima 9. as i only knew little of the story, i found it to be a funny game and i thought it absolved me many questions (ha). i know it's not true, when i read the Hacki's page on the nitpicks section, the game sucks 0]

And finally, i want to ask u guys, as i dont have too much free time, could u recomend me ultima forums, resources and thinks like that where i can find more about the story, or maybe play remakes or emulation of previous games? i know the u7 emulator, the u8 project, and of course, this one... u'd be very helpfull. thanx

me:hat

There's xu4, which is a sort of Exult for Ultima 4. It's not quite finished yet, though.

Thanks, I'll fix it right away.

EDIT: WTF is wrong with closing tags in the ezCodes? I tried the quote and bold tags, and they got screwed!

New Post Very Simplistic History of Ultima
1980-1990
Ultima 1:First Age of Darkness-sucks
Ultima 2:Revenge of the Enchantress-sucks
Ultima 3:Exodus-rules
Ultima 4:Quest of the Avatar-rules
Ultima 5:Warriors of Destiny-rules
Ultima 6:False Prophet-tis the worst of all Ultimas, the game as boring and with a stupid atmosphere
1990-2000
Worlds of Ultima-They Ruled
Ultima Underworlds-They Ruled too
Ultima 7:Black Gate-very good game
Ultima 7:Serpent Isle-the greatest of Ultimas,it had a dark and dramatic story,dark atmosphere,etc.
Ultima 8:Pagan-the second greatest of Ultimas
Ultima 9:Ascension-the atmosphere is too Ultima 6 alike
for me and it totally ignored two of the greates Ultimas,it also showed Guardian(Satan) as an ordinary bad guy

New Post Re: Very Simplistic History of Ultima
My opinion:

Ultima 1:First Age of Darkness-sucks
Ultima 2:Revenge of the Enchantress-sucks
Ultima 3:Exodus-sucks :p
Ultima 4:Quest of the Avatar-rules
Ultima 5:Warriors of Destiny-rules
Ultima 6:False Prophet- They don't really get the war atmosphere right and have a lot of inaccuracies in the plot, but this is still a great game and a great Ultima.
Worlds of Ultima-Savage Empire was not that great IMO, but Martian Dreams was an outstanding game and had one of the more innovative settings for a computer RPG.
Ultima Underworlds-Yup, they ruled :)
Ultima 7:Black Gate-one of the best games ever
Ultima 7:Serpent Isle-see Black Gate
Ultima 8:Pagan-one of the worst Ultimas, just because of the stupid jump n' run parts and the unfinished plot, which would have been excellent otherwise. Also has too little NPCs and dialogues.
Ultima 9:Ascension-just ignore Ascension. It's a mediocre action adventure without much relation to its predecessors :p (see also my website =))

------------------

Nah man, we all know that Ascension has the most accurate story line than all the other Ultima series.
For starters, we all know that the people from SI were magically relocated via software devs after the Avatar was finished there and sent off to Pagan.

We also know that the moongates worked even though they were destroyed along with the Black Gate.

It's all magic that is part of the Ultima series. ;)

New Post Re: Ultima history
Here's my take on the Ultima series:
Ultima 1: First Age of Darkness - Never played it. Intend to one day.
Ultima 2: Revenge of the Enchantress - Never played it. Intend to one day.
Ultima 3: Exodus - Never played it. Intend to one day.
Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar - Have just begun turning my attention to it. Time will tell what I'll think of it. After hearing about Dawn of Virtue, I'll probaby begin playing it more heavily soon enough.
Ultima 5: Brilliant. It was a sad thing that I was initially too naive to appreciate its true beauty, judging it instead by its graphics which I deemed sorely outdated. I'm glad to say Lazarus was the impetus that got me playing it from start to finish at last.
Ultima 6:The False Prophet - Good game, although I'll agree with Hacki on the account that it had a number of inaccuracies, especially in reference to Mondain and Sin'Vraal. They mucked up the time line there a little bit, IMO.
WOU 1: The Savage Empire - Beautiful game, but not quite on par with the quest intricacies of its predecessors and descendants.
WOU 2: Martian Dreams - I'll never forget that game. Damn beautiful.
Ultima Underworld 1: The Stygian Abyss - Rocked beyond compare. One of my absolute favourites. Brilliant engine, deep storyline, and the blending of the FPS and RPG genres achieved a measure of true perfection.
Ultima Underworld 2: The Labyrinth of Worlds - Another brilliant game, but I'd say UW1 gets one notch higher for coming first.
Runes of Virtue: Bah! Let's not go there...
Escape From Mount Drash- Don't think I really want to play that game...might have to get the shovel and dig up the ol' Commodore 64 from the tip.
Ultima 7 Part I: The Black Gate - What can I say? I fell in love with this game after coming to appreciate its intricate depth in story line, immense interactivity (ala hitting people with gavels, jumping dragons with used diapers, etc.) and lovely game engine. A true classic.
Ultima 7 Part II: Serpent Isle - Another classic, although somewhat more linear than its direct predecessor. Somewhat formidable as well. And I used to think Ultima 7 was formidable...:eek
Ultima 8: Pagan - Since it was the second Ultima I played, I initially grew very fond of it, despite many an imprecation thrown at it because of all that accursed jumping and dreadfully inadequate combat system. Since played previous Ultimas, like Ultima 7, UW, etc., my opinion of the game has lowered greatly.
Ultima 9: Ascension - Never played it. From what I've heard, I don't think I ever want to play it. I think it would be a 'MY EYES! MY EYES!' experience. Just goes to show that impressive graphics don't make an impressive game.

Ultima 1: Dammit, Mondain refused to die, couldn't destroy gem for some reason either argh.
Ultima 2: Need to play.
Ultima 3: Need to play
Ultima 4: One of the best ultima's
Ultima 5: Refer to Ultima 4
Ultima 6: Was good, but could have been alot better
Ultima Worlds: Both were good, Martian Dreams better of the two.
Ultima Underworlds: Loved both of those games.
Ultima 7 PI: Awesome game.
Ultima 7 PII: The best Ultima game.
Ultima 8: Was a great game, some things needed fixing and to be completed, but still a great game.
Ultima 9: No comment. If one cannot say anything good, perhaps it is best to say nothing at all :)

New Post my list
Ultima 0 Akalabeth, World of Doom - Very good for me. I spent a lot of time playing it even now :)
Ultima I - The First Age of Darkness- Not as good as Akalabeth. I hate that Dungeons, they were better in Akalabeth
Ultima II Revenge of the Enchantress- Bad Game. Nearly 90% of it is about getting money
Ultima Escape From Mount Drash - Very bad one, but I spent a lot of time searching for it so I get fond of it when I finally got it.
Ultima III Exodus- Good one but a bit difficult (I hated that about I can´t flee from Battle)
Ultima IV Quest of the Avatar- Great Game, one of my favourites
Ultima V Warriors of Destiny - The Best ultima without doubt, it has the best storyline and atmosphere I have ever seen in an Ultima (only thing I hate was that dungeons were a bit too small)
Ultima VI -Good game, but I hate the atmosphere of it because it doesn´t seems a war
Ultima Runes of Virtue - Well this is the worse ultima game I have played
Ultima Runes of virtue II - A bit better than the previous one, but with a lot of innacuracies (Quenton mayor of Skara Brae??)
Worlds of Ultima Savage Empire - one of the best ultimas, only problem was that it doesn´t has female character (The story was prepared only for a male character)
Worlds of Ultima II Martian Dreams - Second in my list of Ultima games :) It was awesome
Ultima Underworld I The Stygian Abyss - I don´t like usually first person games, but this one changed that
Ultima VII Black Gate & Forge of Virtue - Third in my Ultima list. The Expansion was great, I liked that Sword. Only one problem, way too easy
Ultima Underworld II Labyrinth of Worlds - Another underworld, another great game, and another great history (fifth position in my ultima list)
Ultima VII Serpent Isle % The Silver Seed - Fourth in my list, a lot better in some features than the first part of ultima VII, but very linear.
Ultima VIII Pagan. I used to hate this game, but after playing and finished it I changed my opinion. Good history, Bad jump parts. It could have been a lot better
Ultima IX Ascension - well... at least they tried to do a game... Bad history, bad AI... a lot of bugs...

Ultima Online - A great game but... it has become a pointless one. Great engine in my opinion. With a good history and less online players (I mean only 4 or 5 playing an Rol game with a good history) it could have become the greatest ultima.

New Post Mine.
U1 - Nice and all. I hated the dungeons though :p
U2 - Tried it a bit but not much. See U1 for comment on dungeons.
U3 - Pretty nice. It was frustrating to remake all the characters after they died though(either that or I couldn't figure out how to resurrect them). See U1 for dungeons.
U4 - Running around and trying to become a virtuous fellow was fun. Still hate the dungeons though.
U5 - Awesome plot. The dungeons look a bit better now but I still hate the style. :p
U6 - Yay! They got rid of the 3d-dungeons! Good plot too and the music was among the best for the Ultimas.
U7 - To put it simple there was so much cool stuff to do in it. One of the best Ultimas. :)
SI - I loved the plot. Maybe a bit too linear but still pretty much my favourite Ultima.
U8 - Loved the music, the plot and the general atmosphere. Rocked after the patches.
U9 - Nice engine but poor plot with too many stupid inconsistencies.
The Worlds of Ultimas - Loved 'em both :)
The Underworlds - Very good both of them.
The Runes of Virtue - I love Eep eeps.

Guess I'll put my opinion too:

Ultima 1 - finished it in 1 day. Not a bad game for its time.

Ultima 2 - I keep running out of food, damn it! Plus it's totally out of context.

Ultima 3 - Fun and original game. This is the first occasion when there's no space crap, and the first occasion when there's a number for lots of things (just like number 8 recurred often in Ultima 4, number 4 recurred often in U3)

Ultima 4 - Very interesting game, introducing the virtues.

Ultima 5 - Very good yet very hard too.

Ultima 6 - I loved this game - it was the first Ultima to introduce a seamless world without having to >E<nter towns. It seemed very realistic and fascinated me. It was my favourite until I came across Ultima 7.

Ultima 7 - masterpiece.

Serpent Isle - from the little I've played, it seems awesome too.

Ultima 8 - very good game, though somewhat limited. Without all those action jumping and crap, you could finish it in a few hours.

Ultima 9 - can be fun but is out of context with the series, nearly like U2.

Savage Empire - I loved this game because its interactivity was awesome. What game lets you dig mud from a shore, make clay pots, make gunpowder, make home-made grenads and lots of things? This was simply amazing.

Martian Dreams - nice game.

Hehe, UW1 let you make about 5 things like that.

SE let you make about 35. I have a whole list, which I will put online when I come to make a guide for SE.

Aye, I know very well that Savage Empire had many more devices you could make than Ultima Underworld. It was one of the primary reasons why I loved it so much (bamboo flintlocks and hard clay grenades most especially reign supreme!)

I was just playfully pointing out one of my more favoured device creations in UW that SE couldn't pull off. However, if SE could have allowed me to make popcorn, it would probably have become my best Ultima game. :D

New Post my short list
Damn... i just played:
Ultima 4: I played it at first on the NES, and i thought it was great, then i tried Ultima 4, when it came with a magazine as a gift... and i really tried to play it, but it looked so old, i could not :o :x it was like 3 or four years ago...

Ultima 7: GREAT!!! one of the best rpgs, i've ever played, along with Fallout.. and others.

Ultima 8: I liked it alot, but i really don't know if it has the feeling of the other Ultimas, it certainly is different to U7, but.....

Ultima 9: i don't kno, the engine looks cool, the story has many incoherencies... but i liked to see Britannia on a first person perspective...

Underwolrd, i just saw the boxes, and the info on magazines from USA...

END :(
