Introduction ShrineThe Shrines in Ultima V send you to the Codex (E9,E9) to learn about misuse of their corresponding virtue. After the Codex teaches you what you need to learn, you can return to the Shrine to claim an attributes bonus. However, you will only be able to do another quest once you finish your current quest and go back to the Shrine after visiting the Codex.
Truth gives an Intelligence bonus.
Love gives a Dexterity bonus.
Courage gives a Strength bonus.
So the combinations of Truth, Love and Courage will give you multiple bonuses.
The eighth and last time you go to the Codex, it will give you some extra information, including where you must go to finish Ultima V and the Word of Power for Dungeon Doom.

The Runic writing from the Codex comes after you complete all eight quests of the Shrines.
The Ultima 5 Solutions and Hints file on the Ultima Online Archive has made terrible mistakes in translating the runes of the Codex.
The first mistake was in the second word! "Beyond shades egress" - this mistake was a terrible confusion, and from then it became known as the Shadows' Egress, while in reality the Codex directed you to Shame's exit.
Another mistake was in "and venture past ethereal words", where "wards" was confused with "words".
"That which the world hath, dost awaits thy coming" - another terrible mistake. The Codex told you "That which the world hath lost awaits thy coming", meaning that Lord British is waiting for you.
