MAGIC WARES IN ULTIMA VI

by Dino the Dark Dragon

Document still in progress. Changes necessary: collect more data, get more precise locations of things running around and find out or confirm missing or uncertain info in yellow, and search for further undiscovered magical items.

1.) Necklaces

The Avatar's Ankh seems to be unique, and it may be considered magical although it seems to have no apparent use in the game and despite it doesn't glow. This starts off in the Avatar's possession.

The Snake Amulet is Lord British's unique talisman with a lengthy history behind it. It was used to summon Lord British to Sosaria in the dark times of Akalabeth, and was used by Lord British to summon the Stranger through a blue moongate called Siege Perilous the first time. It was used in the time of the Shadowlords as a way past the darkness surrounding Dungeon Doom. It glows, but has no apparent use in Ultima VI.

The Amulet of Submission cannot be removed once worn. It is unique and it glows. Lord Draxinusom gives it to the Avatar once he surrenders, and it is essential because the Avatar has all the Gargoyles' respect and cooperation, as well as assistance.

2.) Potions

Potions are very common, actually they are the only magic items that are not rare, apart from spells, which can be purchased at infinity. There are eight types of potion, distinguished by their different colour. There are potions in Lord British's castle, and potions can be randomly generated in a foe's inventory. The potions are:

WhiteX-Ray vision, but you cannot move while you are under the effects of the potion.
BlackInvisibility.
RedLike dispel magic spell, and cures poison.
YellowMinor healing
GreenPoison
BlueAwaken
PurpleProtection
OrangeSleep

Black, Blue, Purple and Orange in left barrel in Bonn's cellar on Dagger Isle;
White, Black, Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple and Orange in potion room in Lord British's castle

3.) Spells

Include spells and where to get them at a later stage here.

4.) Magic Rings

All rings weigh 0.1 stones and do not glow. Only two rings can be worn by a single character at the same time. There are three types of magical rings:

Invisibility Rings make their bearer invisible. These can be found at these locations:

1 in Phoenix's chest in the lower dungeons under Castle British;
1 in the chest in Whitsaber's house in Trinsic – it's his so taking it means stealing;
1 in the crate in Katrina's house on New Magincia;
1 in Leodon's possession, in Buccaneer's Den;
1 in the mouse hole at tavern in Jhelom with the Rune – you can take it;
1 in a chest in a small house in south Trinsic

Regeneration Rings seem useless to me, but I think that their use could be to heal their wearer over a period of time. They can be found here:

1 on Lord British's finger;
1 in a chest of the west room on the lowest level of the Moonglow catacombs;
1 on the mage's body in the cave with 3 bodies in Deceit.

Protection Rings can absorb 5 points of damage. They can be found at the following locations:

1 on Lord British's finger;
1 on a fallen body in a small room above the lower dungeons beneath Castle British;
1 on the mage's body in the cave with 3 bodies in Deceit.

5.) Wands

Wands are used for offensive striking using spells without using up mana. They do not glow with a blue aura like other magical items, but instead each type of wand glows partially internally in its own way.

A Yew Staff can be purchased from Nicodemus near Yew for 100 g.p. and can be charged with any spell to be used whenever the caster is comfortable to use it, without draining mana. Since it is available for purchase, it is available at infinity. They can be found:

1 on the mage's body in the room with 3 bodies in Deceit.

A Lightning Wand weighs 0.5 stones and can do 30 points of damage. You can find these powerful wands here:

1 in the chest in Nystul's room (Castle British) – you can take it;
1 in Phoenix's chest (lower dungeons under Castle British);
1 in the crate in Katrina's house, New Magincia.

A Fire Wand weighs 0.6 stones and can do 20 points of damage, which makes a lightning wand more convenient since it does more damage and weighs less. Fire wands can be found here:

1 in Phoenix's chest in the lower dungeons under Castle British;
1 on the mat in Sin'Vraal's house in the Dry Land.

6.) Magic Weapons

Enchanted weapons obviously are more powerful than the regular ones. They glow, and offer an excellent rate of damage to be done.

Magic Bows are available for purchase in Britain for 300 gold crowns each. However if you can't afford it and still ask for it, Gwenneth will give you one free! The excellent rate of attack is 20 points of damage and it weighs 1 stone. It takes regular arrows. Magic Bows can be found here:

1 in a magically locked chest (with a glass sword) in Sutek's catacombs, accessed from the west section of Sutek's underground.

Glass Swords are the ultimate killing device. They are no longer available for free as in Ultima V, however there are some running around here and there. The glass sword weighs 1.3 stones and does the maximum 255 points of damage, thus killing any creature with one blow. The only drawback is that it shatters once used, so you can only use a glass sword to kill a creature once. Do not use all the glass swords, as you MUST have at least one glass sword in your possession to finish Ultima VI. One must be given to Ephemerides so that he can make the Britannian Lens. Here are where the glass swords can be found:

3 in Phoenix's possession – 1 in each hand and 1 in her backpack;
1 in a magically locked chest (with a magic bow) in Sutek's catacombs, accessed from the west section of Sutek's underground;
1 in the catacombs beneath Moonglow accessible from the tavern or Xiao's bedroom – it's just past the ladder leading to the second level – you have to search the remains for it;
1 in the left magically locked chest in Bonn's cellar on Dagger Isle.

7.) Items

Gems are the only magical item that cannot be classified with the other magical items. When used, a gem grants the viewer a bird's–eye–view of his immediate surroundings. Yep, they glow. They can be purchased from *name* in *place*. The gems that actually ARE running about are:

12 in Phoenix's chest in the lower dungeons under Castle British;
1 in the crate in Katrina's house, New Magincia;
3 on Captain Hawkins' bones in the hole.

Natreg Dragon tells me that by giving Lord British the book on the Wizard of Oz, he will give you all the gems you can carry.

8.) Protection

Different parts of the body can be protected magically. Here are the different types of magic protection:

A Storm Cloak is the equivalent of Lord British's crown in Ultima V, i.e. it negates magic, with the little difference that it will vanish if you keep it on for too long. A Storm Cloak is not necessary to finish the game, but it is needed to finish the game following the plot. You need to give it to Homer in Buccaneer's Den so that *reason*. It weighs 0.5 stones and is the only magic protection that doesn't glow. The Storm Cloak can be found:

1 in chest of drawers in Jaana's house in north Yew, feel free to take it;
1 in the pirates' treasure.

A Magic Shield glows, weighs 3.5 stones and can absorb 5 points of damage. A magic shield can be purchased from Gherick in Serpent's Hold for *price*. Again they are not vital, but one is needed to finish the game following the plot. You need to give it to Morchella in Serpent's Hold for one of the map pieces. Magic shields can be found:

1 under plant in New Magincia (but it belongs to someone and taking it means stealing);
1 in Phoenix's possession.

Magic Armour can be bought from Brandon, the Trinsic armourer, at 350 gold crowns and it glows. It weighs 7 stones and can absorb 10 points of damage. Magic armour is found:

1 worn by Phoenix in the lower dungeons beneath Castle British;
1 at the Trinsic armourer's (though if you take it it's stealing)

Magic Helms glow, weigh 0.8 stones and can absorb 5 points of damage. They are available for purchase from Brandon, the Trinsic armourer, at 200 gold crowns. They can be found:

1 worn by Phoenix in the lower dungeons beneath Castle British;
1 on a fallen mage suffocated by webs in the Spider Cave.

9.) Concentrations of magical items

Magical items, as you may have noticed, can be found together with other magical items. These are usually concentrated at a place or person. Such concentrations are:

Lord British (Castle British, Britain) who has the Snake Amulet, a regeneration ring and a protection ring;

Phoenix (lower dungeons under Castle British) who has 3 glass swords, a magic helm, magic armour, a magic shield and a guild belt (plus 12 gems in one of her crates);

Phoenix's Locked Chests that have 12 gems, an invisibility ring, a lightning wand and a fire wand – you can take these (maybe because they're stolen);

The crate in Katrina's house (New Magincia) contains 1 gem, a lightning wand and an invisibility ring.

Captain Hawkins' Bones in the hole have a green potion and 3 gems together with other items including a sextant;

Mage's body, cave with 3 bodies, Deceit has a yew staff, a protection ring and a regeneration ring;

Bonn's cellar (accessed from a ladder hidden under the harpsichord) under his house on Dagger Isle houses 4 potions (orange, purple, black and blue) in the left barrel and a glass sword in the left magically locked chest.

10.) Where to buy Magic Wares

Brandon, the Trinsic Armourer, sells magic armour for 350gp and magic helms for 200gp apart from his common wares;

Gherick, the Serpent's Hold Armourer, sells magic shields for *price*.

Nicodemus, who lives near Yew, or far north of Britain, will sell Yew staffs for 100gp.
