GameSpot: The Ultima Legacy once had two screenshots of Ultima 8 that don't seem to feature in the game, and were presumably early marketing material.
The first shows the Avatar and other characters (including two Vardions) fighting against three ghosts and a troll.
The second shows all five Acolytes summoning Pyros at the Great Pentagram. This does not actually happen in the game since the Avatar takes the place of either Bane or Vardion by the time the summoning happens.
After GameSpot: The Ultima Legacy disappeared, the second screenshot was still accessible via the Wayback Machine but the first was lost. It was subsequently recovered and provided by Cear Dragon.
These screenshots were taken by Esteram Dragon and have been recovered from an archived copy of his website, The World of Ultima, which is long gone.
The screenshots were originally split up into five pages, so the subsections below replicate that subdivision, preserving mistakes as well as image order. The World of Ultima mentioned having 52 screenshots of Ultima 8, but there are in fact 51, since one of the Tenebrae screenshots was listed twice.
In summer 2026, Dustin Naegel used AI to generate sophisticated renders of some of the game maps, and used them to accompany his orchestral rearrangement of Ultima 8 music. It's interesting to see what the game might have looked like with newer technology.
