[W]Introducing U8Web

5th August 2026 by Dino

In recent months, edbgon (a former Ultima VIII - Exile colleague) has been building a comprehensive Ultima 8 map viewer with the help of AI. He describes his project, "U8Web", thusly:

edbgon writes: "Ultima VIII: Pagan has always been a bit of an oddball in the series. It is set in a darker, more atmospheric world that's never been easy to see in full, since you normally experience it one tiny screen at a time. With help from some AI tools, I built a map viewer that reconstructs the entire game world in one place: a scrollable, zoomable map you can self-host.

"Beyond just the terrain, you can dig into the game's details. Scroll around and check the contents of chests, read NPC dialog, and browse the text of books, plaques, and scrolls. Listen to the titans speak. Zoom in and pretend you're playing without any point and click jumping while listening to the Tenebrae theme.

"A kind soul has hosted a (somewhat reduced) version of the viewer alongside their own work. The source code is on my GitHub page."

I've added a new entry for U8Web in the Utilities page of the Ultima 8 Guide.

While I was at it, I also fixed a broken link in the Table of Contents of the same page.

The website hosting U8Web, Zelphuria, is an interesting find. Aside from U8Web, it hosts similar interactive map viewers for several other Ultima games, and has a couple of additional resources for Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar. I've added an entry for it at the Ultima Web Database 2 (WebDB2).

Finally, I've also added a WebDB2 entry for U8Web's GitHub page.
